Knox offers design minor as Whitcomb Art Building becomes reality

In time for the Whitcomb Art Building’s fall completion, Knox College has announced a new minor to compliment the new facility.

Knox President Teresa Amott tells Galesburg’s Evening News on WGIL the design minor isn’t limited to graphic design.

“This design minor is really going to pull courses from different areas,” she says, “but it will have those principals of design, whether it’s just a two-dimensional graphic design, whether it’s an industrial design.”

The Whitcomb Art Building is expected to be complete during the 2016-17 academic, weather permitting. Construction began last October.

Speaking on the building’s design, Amott says windows will pull in light from the north side.

“So that’s why you get those north-facing walls that are mainly windows and they bring the light in,” she says. “It’s an old design from factories. To save on artificial light, they would put north-facing windows in and then all day long, you’ve got, essentially, a uniform source of light.”

The building’s name comes from Knox alums Dick and Joan Whitcomb, who made a $5 million cash gift to the liberal arts school.

Knox’s website says the 30,000-square-foot space is expected to cost about $8.9 million.
