Council rezones property for Lux Blox; COVID-19 cases discussed

Galesburg City Council on Monday night approved a rezoning that will allow Lux Blox to consolidate their shipping and packaging operations. The building in question was 262 N. Prairie St. Lux Blox is an educational toy that has been called “next level Legos”, invented by Michael and Heather Accera of Galesburg. Council had no problem with changing the zoning from B1 to B2 designed for businesses that rely on services and patronage outside their neighborhood. Aldermen approved the changes 7-0 after the Planning and Zoning Commission and City administration gave their approval.

City Manager Todd Thompson also reminded residents of the city policy, for now, remains that no water service will be shut off for delinquent bills. He also says that there will be no penalties for late water bills for the month of August.

Galesburg City Administration says they’re taking cautious steps to protect the public and City staff after several city hall employees tested positive for COVID-19 last week. Galesburg City Hall is now closed to the public at least until next Monday. Fielding a question from Alderman Peter Schwartzman, City Manager Todd Thompson said that any employee that has been in contact with a positive COVID case has been tested. Police Chief Russ Idle says that all but one public safety employee has been tested following a recent outbreak among Galesburg officers. That one individual has been on parental leave for weeks so testing them was deemed unnecessary. Thompson says that city employees are still available to help residents by phone, email or appointment if necessary.
