A-Town switching to remote learning to start school year

After making plans to do a hybrid return to learning for District 276, Abingdon-Avon is going to remote learning to start the year.

School Board members on Wednesday night approved the change to start the 2020-2021 school year with a full-remote model in a 4-3 vote.

Superintendent Dr. Mike Curry tells WGIL that board members revisited the return to learn plan after voting on it last week.

“It was a tight vote for the blended model a week ago,” Curry said in a Thursday interview. “And I guess for some folks, the stars aligned and we had a regular board meeting just a week later and somewhere in that time frame, some folks just came to the realization in their mind that maybe the blended model wasn’t the right option.”

The vote to go to a blended model was a tight one and Dr. Curry says that the vote to go remote was out of concern that the blended approach could go very badly.

“I don’t envy the job of a board member in any district, right now. It’s a tough decision to make. The board members, I think, that voted for [the remote plan] were concerned that getting it wrong could be catastrophic.”

Curry said the remote learning plans will be more of a “flip” model. Parents won’t need to act as teachers with their new remote plan. More information is expected soon as to what the remote instruction will look like.

The district will start the year with remote learning for the first six weeks and then in September, the school board will revisit the plan.

Classes begin for A-Town on August 24. Dr. Curry also said the district wants to do an outdoor “meet your teacher” event for students to hand out learning devices.
