New hangar at Monmouth airport could be done before end of spring

The new hangar at the Monmouth Municipal Airport could be built before the end of the next spring.

The City Council on Monday night heard an overview of the airport hangar project from Hutchinson Engineering.

Hutchinson assured the council that the new hangar would meet all regulations and codes and all major components would be American made.

City Administrator Lew Steinbrecher tells WGIL that the contract bid is expected to be opening in October, followed by the pouring of concrete and that the assembly of the hangar to happen over the winter.

“It’s not really a module but it comes in sections to be erected and assembled,” Steinbrecher told WGIL on Tuesday. “And, that can be done during the winter months so we would expect the hangar, probably, to be pretty much done by maybe late winter or early spring of 2021.”

“We’re happy. I know, I’m sure, there are pilots, people — probably plain owners — that are on waiting lists in Galesburg or elsewhere that might be interested in coming here. I’m sure we’ll find 10 renters for the units.”

The airport hangar burned down last October.
