OSF Cardiologist retiring after 47 years at St. Mary

Dr. Madan Gupta, a cardiologist at OSF St. Mary Medical Center is retiring after a career spanning nearly 5 decades. Gupta began at St. Mary in 1973, a year before the construction of the current hospital building on the Seminary Street campus. OSF says that Gupta was the first specialist recruited to the new medical office next to OSF St. Mary’s. He decided to become a doctor in the 12th grade in his native India, eventually coming to the U.S. and training at several New York City hospitals. But Gupta said somehow he didn’t like the intense hustle and bustle, and preferred to practice in a small town. Gupta says he likes to keep busy but he’s now 81 years old, calling that a “good time to retire.” He’s looking forward to spending more time with his children, one who is an architect and another three that are also in the medical field.
