Galesburg Police arrested a man Saturday on felony hate crime charges.
Brian McLaren was said to have approached a black male and female as they were walking down the street.
McLaren began yelling racial slurs and physically attacked the male.
GPD responded to Ohio Avenue Saturday night, saying in a Facebook post when they arrived McLaren was swinging at the male in the street.
Officers say McLaren made numerous racial comments while in custody, which were recorded on the squad car recording system.
They also say he appeared to be intoxicated.
Currently McLaren is in the Knox County Jail where he awaits a bond hearing likely on Monday.
GPD say they take matters like this very seriously and that there’s no place for hate or violence in Galesburg.
