Woman rescued from Galesburg apartment fire

A Galesburg woman had to be rescued from her apartment when the building caught fire early Saturday morning.

That’s according to Galesburg Fire Chief Randy Hovind, who says crews were called to a structure fire at 2:45am Saturday in the 300 block of North Broad Street.

High heat made the blaze somewhat difficult for crews to attack, but when two firefighters were able to enter the structure, Hovind says the two heard someone crying for help.  The use of thermal imaging cameras led them to a 23-year-old female and her dog. Both were able to be rescued, and the woman was taken to the hospital.

Firefighters say the scene was under control in a little more than an hour, but that the building sustained heavy smoke and fire damage. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

A Go Fund Me page has been set up by one of the people displaced from the two-story, five-unit structure.
