Hy-Vee puts limits on meat purchases

With meat supplies a problem and meat processors in some parts of the country not able to operate, another local grocery store has put limits on how much you can buy when you go to their stores.

West Des Moines, Iowa-based Hy-Vee said Tuesday limits on meat sales at all of its stores throughout the Midwest will start Wednesday (May 6).

The company says each customers will be limited to “four packages of a combination of fresh beef, ground beef, pork, and chicken when they checkout….”

A Hy-Vee statement indicates that they’re trying to be prepared for what they call “possible fluctuations in product and best serve our customers,” but that worker shortage at meat processors and increases in meat sales have meant that customers may not find exactly what they’re looking for.

The Smithfield Foods plant in Monmouth opened Saturday after a shutdown likely attributed to workers testing positive for the COVID-19 Coronavirus, but some of the employees instead protested. Other Smithfield and Tyson foods pants in the region, among others, have also been affected.
