Knoxville business owner and community leader passes away

A longtime Knoxville resident whose business on the city’s public square was a staple has passed away.

The Hurd-Hendricks Funeral Home says in an obituary that Lowell Mannhardt passed away last Wednesday at the age of 76 in a Peoria hospital.

Mannhardt was described as a skilled woodworker, as evidenced by the furniture store bearing his name in Knoxville, which had been in business for 47 years.

But as much as Mannhardt was known for business, he was known for community service as well. He was on the Knox County Board representing District Four for ten years, ending in 2010. He organized the Knoxville Christmas Parade and other local events there for 25 years. He was a part of the Knoxville Fire Department, and as a trustee until his passing. And, Mannhardt was president/treasurer of the Knox County Historical Sites for 40 years.  That’s just naming a few examples of his community involvement.

Mannhardt was also a veteran of the Navy and was a Galesburg VFW and Knoxville American Legion member.

A private graveside service will be held. But, a public visitation will be held at Hurd-Hendricks in knoxville Saturday from 1pm to 7pm.  Among others, Mannhardt is survived by his wife, Patricia.
