IHSA formally cancels Spring tournaments, leaves open possibility of Summer “Senior Night”

There may yet be some form of a spring high school sports season, but for now, the Illinois High School Association is saying there won’t be.

The IHSA’s Board of Directors Tuesday voted to formally cancel the state tournaments associated with the Spring sports season.

While it’s not likely the Spring sports season will go on, the IHSA does say that it will consider allowing the spring sports to play a limited number of games — probably to allow for things like Senior Night — at some point in the summer.

The IHSA had hoped for some sort of abbreviated spring sports season, including tournaments, until Governor JB Pritzker last Friday ordered schools in the state to remain closed for the balance of the school year.

IHSA Executive Director Craig Anderson says in a news release it may be disappointing for student athletes, but it also is the right decision.

Summer contact for the fall sports season is also on hold, and the IHSA says it expects to issue new summer contact guidelines if and when the State allows sports to resume.

Spring sports in the IHSA include baseball and softball, but also badminton, bass fishing, boys gymnastics, and girls lacrosse, among others.

Listen to an interview with IHSA Executive Director Craig Anderson Tuesday at 5:10pm on Galesburg’s Evening News on WGIL.
