Monmouth College pitches in and helps clean up Lake McKellar in Tennessee

Monmouth College students, along with students from across the nation pitched in over spring break to help clean up Lake McKellar in Memphis, Tennessee. Despite losing two whole days to stormy weather – and the trip being cut short due to the Coronavirus, students were able to collect 47,000 pounds of trash. Considered an eye soar for many years, mounds of trash in Lake McKellar have had a huge impact on local wildlife. Jake McLean is the Assistant Director of Leadership and Service for the Monmouth Stockdale Fellows. He said they were welcomed by the founder of Living Lands and Waters, Chad Pegracke, who was recognized in 2013 as CNN’s Man of the Year for his efforts to clean up the Mississippi River and other U.S. waterways. Monmouth Sophomore Liam Meyer of Cedarsburg, Wisconsin was one of the 31 Monmouth students who made the trip.
He said, “Service trips like these allow for students to get close with each other early on and allow them to come back to campus knowing their colleagues and motivated to create change.” Last year, students from across the country were able to remove 29,000 pounds of trash. Monmouth Students were joined by students from Texas A&M, Carroll University, and Illinois State University.
