Monmouth College postpones 2020 commencement

Monmouth College has postponed its 2020 commencement Thursday in the latest cancellation or postponement related to the spread of COVID-19.

President Clarence Wyatt writes in a letter to the class of 2020 that stealing seniors spring is among the many inconveniences and injustices the virus has caused.

He cites the Centers for Disease Control directive against gatherings of 10 or more for 8 weeks

Given the current directives and fluid nature of the situation Wyatt says the ceremony won’t take place in May.

But, Wyatt says they’re committed to holding a ceremony at some point this year.

Also in the works is some kind of virtual commemoration to take place on the originally scheduled date.

The student body senate, The Associated Students of Monmouth College, is taking ideas from students on possible alternatives.
Nonetheless, Wyatt says nothing diminishes the graduates’ achievements and “we will all move through this together.”
