Galesburg council considering contract extension for city manager

Galesburg Alderman tonight can approve a new contract for City Manager Todd Thompson.

Galesburg operates under the Council-Manager form government, in which citizens elect aldermen as a legislative body that appoints a manager to oversee the day-to-day operations of the city. That manager has been Thompson now for the past 9 years.

Thompson was given a two-year contract in 2018 that is set to expire in June. This new deal would last until the summer of 2023.

Thompson currently makes about $145,000 and with a new contract giving him a 2.5 percent retroactive pay increase he would begin earning $152,000.

The council’s vote on the last contract for Thompson was 5-2 with some community members and aldermen offering criticism, leading to Angela Bastian and Wayne Dennis opposing the extension. Dennis is still a council member.

Aldermen will also discuss selling the Broad Street Armory for $36,000 to local timber frame and restoration company Trillium Dell.

Trillium Dell has leased the former National Guard Armory from the city since last summer, and have spent over $200,000 to bring the property up to code. The company also plans on investing another $200,000 into the Armory building.

The Armory has sat empty for some time and there were serious discussions amongst the council in 2016 to turn the building into a community center. Ultimately though, the Council rejected that project and it’s $3.4 million price tag.

The improvements Trillium Dell are proposing are required to be completed in five years from the date of the sale and if they aren’t the City would have the option to purchase the property back for $36,000.

Council is still meeting in Council Chambers Monday night at 5:30 p.m. although they remind residents you can watch the meeting online or on Channel 7.
