The District 205 Board of Education will decide Monday night on the proposal to eliminate registration and activity fees for all students.
It was discussed extensively at the February board meeting that the school administration was having a difficult time collecting on outstanding fees in the district.
The proposal from administrators was to eliminate registration and activity fees for all students across the district. Superintendent Dr. John Asplund called it a “radical departure” from the district’s tradition.
According to board documents, the board would also be eliminating participation fees for both the Junior High and High School.
The Driver’s Education fee would increase from $230 to $250 and the student parking fee is proposed to increase from $20 to $40 — far lower than what was discussed in February, $180.
The breakfast and lunch fees for the high school ar increasing $0.10. This is a requirement of the National School Lunch Program guidelines, which requires the district to increase breakfast and lunch fees by that amount every year until the fees equal the per meal reimbursement of the program.
School board members could also enter into a 10-year lease to provide a new home for the Galesburg Area Vocational Center.
The agreement would put GAVC into a portion of Northwoods Church on Fremont St, just across from the high school.
The lease would start in July 2020 and end on June 30, 2030, and have the district paying $5,300 a month.
As far as the ongoing renovation projects, the board members will be deciding on the central kitchen renovation electrical re-bid package.
Last month, the board approved $3,215,939 in renovation bids for the high school kitchen, which will double in size to accommodate all of the food production for the entire district.
Russell Construction is recommending the board accept a bid of $583,700 for the electrical work from Lakewood Electric and Generator Services.
Russell is also presenting the board bids for electrical and plumbing for the modular classrooms.
Laverdiere Construciton’s plumbing bid of $124,740 and Quick Electrical Contractors’ electrical bid of $313,421 are the recommended bids.
Additionally, the board could decide to use the Fiscal Year 2020 Title One funds to purchase 860 Chromebooks from CDW for a total of $218,440.
Title One funds are federal dollars that are given to schools that have a high percentage of low-income students.
The board meets in an open session at 7:00 at the board offices on Harrison Street.
