One injured after police pursuit

A Rock Island man was injured and had to be Life Flighted after a single-vehicle accident, following a police pursuit, in Galesburg.

Officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a 2006 Volkswagen Passat at around 12:06 Wednesday morning according to police reports.

The vehicle, driven by 50-year-old Darrell Dickerson, however, attempted to evade officers as it traveled down the South Street underpass and down South Seminary Street. The vehicle was traveling in excess of 50 miles-per-hour.

Officers terminated the pursuit and began searching the area for possible damage and to make sure no one was harmed.

A short time later officers still searching the area found the Volkswagen upsidedown in a farm field near the Seminary and Knox County Highway 10 intersection.

The vehicle appeared to hit a power pole on the west side of the road and flipped numerous times across the field before it landed.

Reports say that Dickerson was lying on the roof of the vehicle under the steering wheel, having sustained “significant” injuries. Reports also say that officers detected the smell of alcohol.

Knox County deputies requested the Illinois State Police to be called in as well.

Dickerson was transported to St. Mary Medical Center via ambulance and was to be transported again via Life Flight.

Reports say that Dickerson had seven convictions for driving with a suspended/revoked license, three convictions for driving under the influence, and two convictions for aggravated eluding.

Charges are pending after Galesburg Police forwarded the report to the Knox County State’s Attorney’s office.
