Galesburg council to consider video gambling fees

Galesburg City a Council will have an ordinance on final reading at their meeting Monday night to enact fees for video gambling machines.

Businesses with video gaming machines would have to pay a $250 fee per machine annually under the proposal.

Council had the same measure up for a vote in 2017 but aldermen rejected it, fearing the fees were too onerous on businesses.

Gaming terminal fees are not uncommon in Illinois, and some are far greater than $250.

Galesburg City Council will also consider an ordinance aimed at clarifying the residential solid waste ordinance.

Council documents say there’s been confusion over two sections that seem to contradict. One section says that residents can keep trash in a rear or side yard, but another says trash receptacles must be kept out of sight.

The proposed ordinance would require that receptacles be kept behind the building’s front property line.

Residents would still be required to make sure receptacles have a tight-fitting lid with all loose trash debris contained.

In some other business, aldermen will consider a $54,000 bid to recondition the city’s 2004 vacuum truck. The reconditioning is intended to extend the life of the truck.  This comes as the vacuum truck is getting more use.

The street department has increased its dedication to cleaning sewers and inlets and the water department uses it a lot during water main repairs and replacements.

Aldermen can also approve a five-year agreement with Supreme Radio Communications to provide public-safety communication installation, repair, and maintenance services.

Supreme Radio was the only contractor to submit a bid for the project. The new agreement will have the city paying 3 percent above the previous contract.

Council meets at City Hall starting at 5:30 p.m.
