Mercer County public defender named Associate Judge

Mercer County’s public defender has been appointed to the bench.

Daniel Dalton was selected by the judges of the 14th Judicial Circuit last week as an associate judge.

Dalton is also in private practice in Moline, aside from his public defender duties in Aledo.

Judge Dalton is a 2006 graduate of John Marshall Law School in Chicago and opened up a law practice in Rock Island in 2007.

Dalton graduated from Bradley University with a Bachelor’s degree in 1996 and John Marshall Law School in Chicago in 2006.

He was once a candidate for Mercer County State’s Attorney in 2008.

Radio station WRMJ reports that Dalton’s promotion has led to the appointment of an interim public defender that can handle several serious cases.

One of those includes 34-year-old Antonio Cortez Williamson who has three pending felonies against him of predatory criminal sexual assault of a victim under the age of 13.

Dalton admitted in 2008 to breaking a law that says attorneys can’t post bond for others when posted $100 for a friend to be released on a misdemeanor charge.

Dalton was never charged and told The Dispatch-Argus that he didn’t believe he violated the “spirit of the law.”

The 14th Judicial Circuit is comprised of Henry, Mercer, Rock Island, and Whiteside counties.
