ROWVA teacher honored at state conference

A ROWVA School District teacher has been awarded the “Teacher of the Year” award from the Illinois Association for Career and Technical Education.

Mike Hagedorn, an automotive and technology teacher with ROWVA District 208, was given the award at the annual conference held in Bloomington Normal last week.

Hagedorn spent years working in the automotive and construction industries before applying for a teaching position at ROWVA High School in 2013.

As the junior high shop teacher, he instituted a “CTE Chat” to better formulate a plan on how to serve the students. The end result? A mechanics class with the end goal of having a race car that would compete at the Cordova Raceway.

After talking to fellow teachers, administration, and the ROWVA Board of Education, as well as making a list of tools need to get off the ground and with the support of the local community, the program was approved and got off the ground.
