Several firearms reported stolen in weekend residential burglary

A number of firearms were reported stolen early Sunday morning from an East Grove Street home.

According to Galesburg Police, officers were dispatched to the 600-block of East Grove at about 12:57 for the reported residential burglary.

Police reports say that the victim informed police that he and a small group had been out at Applebee’s until late and when they returned to his residence they found the front and rear driver’s side door of his truck opened and the passenger side window shattered.

The man informed police that he found the back door of his residence was “kicked in” and several items were scattered throughout the home. Officers observed the back door to have been pried open and the storm door forced open too.

Officers also were directed to the garage which had been broken into as well. Officers found the garage door-opening mechanism was damaged. While searching the garage, officers located a live shotgun shell on the garage.

The man allegedly denied possessing any guns. Police reports noted that the man was a felon.

He would later change his story saying that he owned several firearms. Reports say that he admitted to lying because he was a felon on probation and didn’t want to get in trouble.

Reports say that nine firearms were taken. The police report notes that two shotguns (a 12 gauge and 20 gauge) four rifles (.22, .308, .243, .300 Winchester Magnum) and an unknown caliber handgun were also taken.

Additionally, two tablets, two XBOX video game consoles, an HP computer, various tools, a truck dashcam, and a security camera were also taken.

Officers were given the harddrive for the security system at the residence, which was not taken in the burglary.

The investigation continues.
