Republican congressional candidate making the rounds in 17th District

With a month to go before the Illinois Primary, potential Republican nominee, Esther Joy King, is making her rounds to meet potential voters.

King, an East Moline real estate lawyer and small business owner, says that if Elected she’d do more to bridge the gap that separates Republicans and Democrats from working together.

One thing she says is important for her is to bring the human factor back into politics. She says bringing people together to compromise or create bipartisan solutions is possible.

“We always see people on TV screens. They’re making their one-liner soundbites rather than just being in a conversation at a table, having coffee.” King tells WGIL. “And having the political conversations that way, I think is a much more effective way of getting something accomplished.”

She was in Monmouth and Galesburg last week, speaking with constituents and learning about them and their lives.

In speaking with these people, she says she’s hearing a lot of concerns from people in the district. One of those concerns that people are relieved is over is the impeachment of President Donald Trump.

“We want our government to function for us, right? We want real things to happen that help our lives. We’re not really interested in the games of Washington D.C. And so, I can say in the last week and a half, I’ve spoken with so many people who have commented that they’re grateful that that’s behind us and we can get back to business in really a functional government.”

King said that she’s honored to be apart of the process and that she’s hearing there’s a lot of excitement regarding the race and her candidacy.

The Illinois Primary is March 17th. Both the incumbent, Cheri Bustos, and Joy King have primary opponents.

King is facing off with Bill Fawell on the Republican ballot. Fawell lost to Bustos in the 2018 election after he lost support from the Republican Party.

Bustos’ challenger is Peoria’s Spanky Edwards who is a write-in candidate after he was kicked off the ballot in the Democratic primary.

Early voting began on February sixth.
