Swanson holding farmland assessment meetings next month

In partnership with the Knox, Henry, and Bureau County Farm Bureaus, State Representative Dan Swanson of Alpha is holding a number of farmland assessment meetings next month.

Farmland owners or farm managers are invited to attend any of the three meetings that are scheduled for Monday, March 2.

“I’ve got, in cooperation and partnership with Farm Bureau, where I’m holding some [Farmland Tax Assessment conferences] throughout my district. The purpose is a lot of farmers have been calling asking ‘why my farmland assessments went up by quite a bit?’ So that’s the purpose of this assessment. To help farmers and landowners to understand why their assessments went up based upon an act in 2012.”

The increases in property tax bills payable in 2020 and for several years to come.

The first meeting of the day will be at Carl Sandburg College between 8:30 am and 10:30 am. The second meeting will be held in the Bureau County Metro Center in Princeton from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm. The final meeting will be held at Black Hawk East Auditorium in rural Galva from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm.

RSVP’s are requested to the County Farm Bureaus so that enough materials and seating will be provided at each event. Additionally, attendees do not need to be residences of the three counties to attend.

Presentations will be made by Brenda Matherly, Director of Local Government Affairs with the Illinois Farm Bureau and are intended to give attendees a better understanding of how farmland assessments are calculated and the long-term impact of those values.
