Building of Monmouth airport hangar could start as early as the fall

There’s hope that the burned down airport hangar in Monmouth will be rebuilt sooner than originally believed.

Demolition of the old hangar at the airport is done and the timeline for the replacement was projected to be finished between 18 and 24 months but Lew Steinbrecher, the City Administrator for the Maple City, tells WGIL that work may get started as soon as this fall.

But, Steinbrecher says, that depends on if they get approval from IDOT in the summer.

“So that, perhaps, we could start construction of the hangar by the fall. It’s kind of a new timeline. We’re hopeful we can get started with replacing the hangar.”

Steinbrecher says that they’re negotiating with the Transportation Department and one of the sticking points will be the location of the new hangar.

The old hangar was located on the east side of the runway but officials want it on the west side.

Steinbrecher says that’ll require federal and state money to build a new taxiway if the hangar is relocated to the west side.

“That’s part of the conversation — we’re hoping we can find out by this summer. Not only about the location but also about any state or federal funding we might be able to obtain as well.”

Steinbrecher says that if they do agree to build the new hangar on the west side of the runway, the city would need funding to build a new taxiway between the hangar and the runway — as currently there is no taxiway on the west side.
