Affordable dental work provided by Sandburg students

Dental work can be expensive, but students with Carl Sandburg College’s dental hygiene program can help you out.

The program is providing services like dental cleaning and x-rays for a low cost at Sandburg’s downtown annex.

Stephanie Burkhardt with the dental hygiene program teeth cleanings prices are as low as $10 and as much as $25. That includes polish and fluoride.

The services are performed by second-year students in the dental hygiene program, supervised by licensed faculty members and dentists.

Burkhardt says since this is a chance for students to practice, appointments typically take 3 and a half hours. She says she knows that plenty of people get nervous about going to the dentist, but going into the clinic is different than a typical dentist’s office.

“Most patients on an average get done in two visits but it can take more,” Burkhardt tells WGIL. “It just depends on the patients, what the students are going for — being graded on, and what competencies they have.”

She says patients will come into a large clinic area, not confined into an enclosed space.

Burkhardt says some students stop after obtaining an Associate’s at Sandburg, some go on to get a Bachelor’s and occasionally some even become dentists.
