South Street pedestrian safety still a concern.

Pedestrian safety has become a topic of interest on South Street near the Knox College campus. After a student was struck and killed by a vehicle 8 years ago, several crosswalks and pedestrian crossing signs went up on the stretch of roadway to enhance safety. But safety is still a concern – the Register Mail reported a person being struck by a vehicle in October of last year. The City has considered adding flashing light systems to the crossings – Knox students are in favor of turning intersections into four-way stops. Galesburg City Engineer Aaron Gavin told the paper that with the positive feedback for the flashing light system from Knox students, he anticipates the City making the purchase. The rectangular rapid flashing beacon systems would sit on the Cedar and West Street intersections on South Street. The systems cost roughly $10,000 apiece. Installing four-way stops at the intersections on South Street to disrupt the flow of traffic since it sees more traffic than its intersecting streets. Knox and the City would split the material costs of the systems and City workers would install them.
