Monmouth awards grant money to businesses

Aldermen for the City of Monmouth approved the disbursement of TIF money to two downtown businesses last night.

In total, the two businesses will receive $45,000 as part of the building rehabilitation grant for the downtown properties.

City Administrator Lew Steinbrecher says that TIF money is used for commercial building rehabilitations — used to keep the structural integrity of the buildings.

“Preserving the building itself so you’d be looking at tuckpointing, roof replacement, new electrical service, major plumbing, or mechanical like having to replace the furnace and air conditioning — that type of thing.”

JB’s Woodshed received $15,000 dollars to help offset many improvements that have been done to the businesses, including a new roof, foundation repair, and installing a new HVAC unit.

The other businesses — a banquet hall in the 200-block of North Main Street — was awarded $30,000 to help aid in the installation of a fire sprinkler system and structural repairs.

Additionally, the United Way of Warren County was awarded $6,500 dollars in grant money for facade work at their new location on the public square.

Steinbrecher says that while the TIF grant is for maintaining the structural integrity of a building, the facade grant is for the storefront of businesses.

“The facade program only looks at improving the storefront itself. Be it a new awning or replacing the windows, signage for the business in the front.”

Work will include new canvas canopy and removal of wood facade paneling.

The Warren County United Way is moving out of its East Broadway location to the new downtown spot.

Steinbrecher also tells WGIL that the City Council approved the changes made to the Video Gaming Ordinance that was discussed at the council’s previous meeting.
