Galesburg’s unemployment drops below 5%

The unemployment rate in the month of November for the City of Galesburg dropped to 4.6 percent.

According to the Illinois Department of Employment Security, Galesburg’s unemployment rate declined from October of this year by 0.4 percent.

Numbers released Friday show that the labor force in Galesburg dropped by 163 individuals, most of which were employed individuals.

The month’s numbers are significantly better than what they were in November of 2018 when the unemployment rate was 5.9 percent.

Since then, the IDES numbers indicate that the number of unemployed people dropped over 170 while the number of employed dropped almost 80.

The unemployment rate for the Galesburg Micropolitan Statistical Area saw a half of a percent decrease from October to 4.2 percent — which is a full percentage point better than in November of 2018.

Knox County’s unemployment sits at 4.2 percent for the month of November– down half of a percent from October and a full percent from the same month the year before.

IDES numbers show that the number of employed dropped by 174 people while the number of unemployed saw a decline of 112.

Knox County ranks as 25th highest unemployment in the state and eight-tenths above the state average. Stark County had the highest unemployment of Knox’s neighbors and third highest in the state at 5.1 percent.

Warren County continues to sport the best unemployment number at 3.3 percent — a 0.3 percent better than the month prior and seven-tenths of a percent better than a year ago.

All of Knox County’s neighbors have seen improvements from last month with the biggest drop in the unemployment rate coming in Peoria County, which saw a 0.8 percent decrease.
