Construction projects ramping up in Monmouth

Several construction projects are getting ready to start in the not-too-distant future in the Maple City.

Plans have been submitted for the new Love’s Travel Stop on the southwestern corner of Monmouth according to City Administrator Lew Steinbrecher.

“The engineering for the extension of the water and the sewer are pretty much done for the road re-construction. I believe that Love’s is looking at starting construction in April. So, that’s pretty much on track.”

Steinbrecher says that the Arby’s location going up on North Main has also submitted their plans to the city and will be going up soon.

“The Arby’s restaurant has submitted their plans and specs for their new store out there on North Main. They’ve actually got a sign on the property now saying ‘Construction Soon.'”

Another project that is in the works is the revitalization of the public square in the Maple City. Steinbrecher tells WGIL that the project could start as early as 2021, depending on when the grant application that will fund the project opens up.

“We’ve done the preliminary engineering and we haven’t heard yet what the exact application deadline is. We’ve heard it might be in the spring, we’ve heard it might be next fall, but whenever that is we will be prepared to submit a grant application and we’re looking at a grant in the amount of, roughly, a million dollars with a $200,000 match from the city.”

He said the project would reconstruct the different quadrants of the city square to make it a more “pedestrian-friendly environment.”
