IHSA cancels centralized football scheduling

The Illinois High School Association’s member schools have decided to rescind a coming change to football scheduling that would have seen schools put into “districts.”

The move that would have ended long-standing conferences like the Western Big 6 in football and centralized scheduling authority to the IHSA instead of schools scheduling their own games.

The emphasis for IHSA’s scheduling would be matching up schools with similar enrollments.

IHSA Executive Director Craig Anderson says in a news release that many coaches and communities were excited about the prospect of district scheduling but also says “many are excited today that it will ultimately not occur in 2021.”

Anderson hints that the IHSA hasn’t totally abandoned changes to regular season scheduling or the playoff structure.

Galesburg High School Athletic Director Eric Matthews did not respond to calls for comments.

Matthews told WGIL last December he suspected the district system would create more travel as teams have to make a trek to similar size schools.
