Icon of Galesburg softball, Ron Carr passes away

Ron Carr, a man so synonymous with Galesburg softball that one of the Lake Storey fields is named for him, passed away last week.

Carr, known to many as “Mr. Softball” was 77.

Carr for over two decades organized worth of softball for GHS, Carl Sandburg College and City parks and rec.

Then-City recreation superintendent Roger Sensabaugh said in 2005 that Carr scheduled about 4,000 games for the city’s recreation league.

He also ran the Class B girls state softball tourneys each summer according to The Register-Mail.

Carr was inducted into the Illinois Amateur Softball Association Hall of Fame in 2012.

He began serving as an Illinois ASA district commissioner and umpire in chief in 2000.

He also worked for Gates Rubber Co. for 37 years and afterward worked at the Galesburg Clinic.

He was recognized for those efforts in 2015 when Lake Storey softball diamond no. 1 was named for him.

He also gave great support to local volleyball, basketball, and baseball.

Carr entered the Amateur Softball Association Hall of Fame in 2012 and served as an Illinois ASA district commissioner and lead umpire starting in 2000.

Funeral services were held over the weekend. Carr was survived by five children and several grandchildren.
