City Council to consider speed limit reduction on Seminary Street

Galesburg City Council has a speed limit reduction on a heavily traveled city road on its council agenda Monday night.

The ordinance would take North Seminary Street from Carl Sandburg Drive to 300 feet north of Circle Drive, from having a 40 mph limit to 35 mph. The measure is only on first reading.

The city’s Traffic Advisory Committee conducted a speed study after receiving a request to review the limit.

They measured traffic speeds over a one-day period, with over 60,000 vehicles counted, traveling in all directions. The average vehicle traveled 44 mph in the zone, with northbound traffic tending to be especially speedy.

City staff is recommending Galesburg City Council approve a $1 million bid for replacement of the ventilation system at the Oquawka Water Treatment Plant.

The current ventilation system needs to be replaced because of its deteriorated condition and its inability to provide adequate ventilation of the filter room according to Council documents.

Sufficient money is budgeted in the water fund to cover the cost.

Aldermen are also expected tonight to reduce the limit of liquor licenses in town down to 25, which typically happens when a business is no longer using a license.

Council has the ability to raise or lower the number of liquor licenses at their discretion.

Also, the Council could approve a resolution that would signal that the city does not plan on raising their property tax levy any higher than 5 percent.

Aldermen last year approved a levy that was 1.5 percent more than the previous year.

Council meets in Council Chambers at City Hall at 5:30 p.m. this evening.
