Bustos promoting submissions to military academy

Congresswoman Cheri Bustos is reminding interested students that she is accepting applications from high school students for nominations to the United States Service Academies for the class entering in the fall of 2020. Every year, Bustos nominates up to ten qualified young people from Illinois’ 17th Congressional District for attendance at four service academies: the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, NY, the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD, the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, NY. In a news release, Bustos said, “I encourage all students interested in this opportunity to submit an application to my office as soon as possible. Young leaders who answer the call to serve to give me hope for the future of our nation.” When applying, students must submit an application, an essay, high school transcript, ACT/SAT scores and letters of recommendation. The eligibility requirements are: the student must be between 17 and 23, a US citizen, unmarried with no children to support, must meet medical, physical, and academic requirements, and must live within the 17th congressional district. More information and applications are available online – the deadline is Friday, November 1st.

As part of her Rural Green Partnership, Congresswoman Cheri Bustos on Tuesday, October 29th introduced legislation that would provide loans for transportation of anthropogenic carbon dioxide. The U.S. has approximately 5,000 miles of existing CO2 pipeline networks, and much of the CO2 is transported to the Permian Basin for use in enhanced oil recovery – a process through which the CO2 can be moved safely and permanently stored. Expanding these networks of pipelines will accelerate the deployment of carbon capture projects in multiple industries. The new pipelines in Bustos’ Invest CO2 Act would allow CO2 to be captured at industrial sources – like manufacturing plants and oil refineries and moved to areas where it can be stored or used. Bustos said, “This legislation will…mobilize the resources our region has to offer by building out infrastructure to capture carbon and create a cleaner environment. As a result, we have an opportunity to capitalize on this potential and create good-paying jobs to grow the local economy.”
