Another Galesburg resident scammed over the phone

Another Galesburg resident has been scammed of thousands of dollars over the phone by people claiming to be working for the federal government.

Galesburg Police were contacted by a man Friday morning who said that he had been contacted over the phone by individuals who worked with the Internal Revenue Service.

The man told police that the callers sounded foreign. These IRS agents stated that the man’s social security number was being used in Texas for illegal transactions.

The 75-year-old victim told police that the caller informed him he had to obtain a “voucher” in the amount of $1,800 and wait for a return call to resolve the issue.

The victim obtained two Target gift cards for the amount and when the caller contacted him he gave them the card numbers.

He told police that after the interaction he spoke with staff at his bank who told him to contact the police.

This is an ongoing scam throughout the country and the second time last week that a Galesburg resident was bilked out of their money.
