Your weekend: Scenic Drive, Spoon River Drive, classic on-stage performances

It’ll take much more than rising river waters to stop the 2019 Spoon River Valley Scenic Drive October 5th-6th and 12th-13th. The first of two weekends of the drive begins October 5th with popular stops that include food, historic sites, crafts, gifts, games, demonstrations, and more. You’ll want to plan ahead this weekend – the entire drive in Fulton County covers 140 driven miles. Stops of interest during the Spoon River Drive include Canton, Cuba, Ellisville, Farmington, Lewistown, and London Mills. “I do believe we’ve been around for about 53 years,” said Deb Flube, organizer of the Drive in London Mills. “We’re sporting over 105 vendors. We’re having more vendors this year than last year. We’ve reached out to new vendors and we’ve kind of locked-in to what our key vendor (type) would be. People come to London Mills for the food and the beauty of the river. They’ve made it a plan to come every year.” There are also stops in Smithfield, Table Grove, Vermont, Fairview, and Duncan Mills.

The first of two weekends for the Knox County Scenic Drive is here and there are stops for everyone in the family along the way. You can begin in downtown Knoxville, the Knox County Fairgrounds, or Walnut Grove Farm in Knoxville for great food, craft vendors, demonstrations, and historical sites. Other stops include Dahinda, Maquon, and Elmwood.

The Orpheum Theatre in Galesburg welcomes Central Illinois Ballet with their presentation of Phantom of the Opera Saturday, October 5th. In the end, you’ll question everything you thought you knew about this cherished story, and you’ll leave thrilled and inspired. “Central Ballet our of Peoria – they have created their own unique take on this story and choreographed it in dance,” said Erin Glasnovich, interim Executive Director of the Orpheum Theatre. “I’m really excited about it. We saw them do a different ballet a few months ago and that kind of sold us on the company for being creative and being able to express it well and do beautiful dancing. So we wanted to bring them in and we’re hoping it’s going to be a great show. I’m confident it will be (a great show).” The show begins on Saturday, October 5th at 7:30 pm and tickets start at $20 and can be purchased at the Orpheum Theatre Box Office, or online.
