Peter Schwartzman receives community service award

Galesburg Alderman and Knox College professor Peter Schwartzman has been announced as this year’s recipient of the Mike Kroll Community Service Award given by the Galesburg Public Library Foundation.
Schwartzman is Chair of Knox’s environmental studies program having written over 200 professional articles over the last decade, and holding a Ph.D. in Environmental Studies.

But the community involvement that he’s being recognized for runs deep.

Besides serving on the City Council for nearly 9 years, Schwartzman founded the Knox Prairie Community Kitchen, works on the Illinois Stewardship Alliance and has been an advocate for urban farming.

He has worked to bring more trees to Galesburg in addition to several other green initiatives.

The Mike Kroll Community Leadership Award is annually given to a person in the community who has contributed far and beyond to help the community improve.

Past winners include Naomi Law and Devone Eurales.
Schwartzman will be formally awarded at the Foundation’s annual dinner Oct. 4, at the Knights of Columbus Hall.
