Siegel running for Warren Co. State’s Attorney

Long-time Public Defender Thomas R. Siegel announced his election bid last week for Warren County’s State’s Attorney.

Siegel says he pledges to use his experience to continue modernizing the office practices and procedures.

Despite working for so long on defending the accused, Siegel says his work remains focused on the pursuit of justice. “It is only my particular role in that pursuit of justice which will change, but it will remain my duty to ensure the integrity of the criminal justice process in Warren County and work in the interests of justice.”

He says in a press release that, “The community here is a part of who I am. It’s where I’ve grown up as a young man and as an attorney. The people here, of course, are what make the community great.”

Siegel’s ties to the community began after he graduated from what is now United High School in 1995. He is a Monmouth College alumn and went on to receive his law degree from Northern Illinois University in 2002.

Upon graduating, he went to work for local attorneys Theodore Stansell, Richard L. Whitman, and the Honorable James G Baber. Eventually, he was made partner at what became Whitman, Baber, and Siegel.

He started serving as the Public Defender in Warren County in 2006, a position he held until 2018 when resigned to focus on his private practice, which he opened in 2015.

Siegel also serves on the board of the local Head Start and teaches Criminal Law and Criminal Procedure for Police at Carl Sandburg College. Additionally, he serves as a member of the Commission on Pretrial Practices, First Appearance and Preventive Detention Subcommittee.

Current Warren County State’s Attorney, Andrew Doyle, announced last week his intention to run for the open judge seat on the Ninth Judicial Circuit. The Register-Mail reported that current former Knox County — current Warren County — Assistant State’s Attorney Andrew Stuckart is also running to be the county’s top prosecutor.
