Knox County property tax due date next week

It’s time to pay the taxman.

Knox County Treasurer Robin Davis has given official notice that the second installment of real estate taxes are due by next week, Sept. 4.

Davis told the County Board’s Finance Committee in April that the delay was largely due to the assessor’s office being overwhelmed by solar applications this spring.

Even with the delay, state statute says a taxpayer must have at least a 30-day window to pay their bills.

If you’re mailing in your payment it must be postmarked no later than Sept. 4.

If you’re dropping it in one of the two boxes on the courthouse lawn, the payments need to be deposited by 8:30 a.m. on Sept. 5.

Most banks in Knox County will also accept real estate tax payments, with the exception of Wells Fargo.

Statutory penalties will be assessed if payments are late.

Tax bills were sent out slightly later than usual spring, as the Supervisor of Assessments office was swamped with applications for solar projects.
