There’s a new program coming to the Knox County YMCA to designed to help kids ages 8-15 and their families with healthy lifestyles and healthy eating habits.
Healthy Kids U has joined the YMCA to offer a community-based healthy lifestyle program combining exercise with nutrition and behavioral classes.
The 8-week program is designed to help children ages 8-15 and their families.
Families work with a dietitian and health care professionals from OSF St. Mary Medical Center and an exercise specialist from the YMCA – to develop healthier habits.
Participants also have access to the YMCA’s facilities during the duration of the program.
The cost is free – and no physician referral needed.
Organizers are looking for participants who do not meet the 5-2-1-0 criteria which are: 5 servings fruits/vegetables per day; 2 hours or less of screen time per day; 1 hour or more of exercise per day; and 0 sugar-sweetened beverages.
Beginning September 24th, the program is Tuesdays from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm.
One hour is focused on nutrition and behavior, and another hour is physical activity.
Family participation is required.
Those who successfully complete the program (attend 80% of sessions) will get a discounted family membership to the Knox County YMCA.
