City targets end of September as target date for Park Plaza completion

The bulk of reconstruction on downtown Galesburg’s Park Plaza and adjacent parking lots should be finished by the end of September.

That’s what Galesburg Director of Planning and Public Works Wayne Carl told WGIL on Thursday. That target date includes landscaping.

But Carl says improvements can’t be made on the side of the Plaza near 120 East Main Street. until bids come back in for repairs. The building has a lean and a fault roof.

City Administration said in June in council documents their intention would be to spend up to $390,000 to repair the building’s wall and repair the roof.

Carl says they’re still looking into if the building can be repaired or if it will have to be demolished.

“We’re trying to get bids for the repair of the wall, repair of the roof, and once we have all those numbers in we’ll be making a decision.”

City Manager Todd Thompson has said that demolition costs for 120 E. Main may not be much more than making the repairs, but the city would also like to maintain a historic property for commercial use.
