Galesburg Council to consider making treasurer unpaid position

The Galesburg City Council Monday night will render a decision on making the city treasurer an unpaid position appointed by the mayor, as opposed to a part-time elected position.

Aldermen in 2016 made the position part-time, also taking the salary from $54,000 to $12,500. At that time, the city council considered appointing city finance director Gloria Osborn treasurer.

Mayor John Pritchard has told WGIL if council approves this latest change he will immediately appoint Osborn as treasurer.

He says she’s been handling the statutory duties of the treasurer since Elisha French resigned in August of 2017.

French has been insisting the city has acted illegally by not replacing him, even though he won a write-in election campaigning to eliminate the office.

Also, the council can approve the purchase of a new pick-up truck for the fire department, replacing the Chevy truck that’s been utilized for the past 17 years.

After receiving bids the recommended purchase is a 2019 Dodge Ram from Yemm Chevrolet for about $25,000 with trade-in.

Galesburg Alderman could also approve to resurface a series of roads in town, along with accompanying repairs to sidewalks, curbs, and gutters.

The entire package has a price tag of $650,000 and will include repairs on West Losey, East Losey, Lincoln Street, and Monmouth Boulevard. Work is scheduled to begin in Mid-August.

Council can also approve the demolition of two properties; one at 426 S. Chambers St., the other at 586-590 W. South Street.

The Planning Department has taken necessary steps through the court system to, which have both been found to be either dangerous to the public or economically unfeasible to restore.

Additionally, Aldermen will have the chance to approve a professional services agreement to study a rural mass transit district for Knox County.

Mainly the city wants to determine how a mass transit district would affect the services Galesburg Transit already offers. It is believed the study should be done in about 6 weeks.
