A-Town adds competitive cheer, discusses therapy dog

Girls on the Abingdon-Avon cheerleading team will have the opportunity to compete in the district’s first competitive cheerleading team in the winter.

District 276 Superintendent Dr. Mike Curry tells WGIL that the board of education approved the team’s creation at their July board meeting.

“It’ll be categorized in the small group according to the sponsor of the cheerleaders,” Curry said. “So it’ll be three to five girls that compete competitively. I think they’ll do four competitions a year.”

He says it’ll offer some higher level of gymnastics and tumbling for the girls who make the team.

Additionally, the school board held discussion this month on utilizing a therapy dog on a more regular basis – two days a week during the school year.

Dr. Curry says that they piloted the therapy dog program last year, and saw some outstanding results.

“We kind of piloted it last year and saw some kids who were non-verbal with other adults and other children but they kind of open up with the dog. It’s amazing.”

He says that he sees a lot of value in having a therapy dog, Sophie, there for students to help open up.

Curry says there is no cost to the district as Sophie belongs to one of the district’s guidance counselor.
