Not guilty plea entered in shooting death of sheriffs deputy

An Avon man accused of opening fire on a Fulton County sheriffs deputy several weeks ago has entered his first plea in the case.

WMBD-TV in Peoria reports 42-year-old Nathan Woodring entered a not guilty plea Wednesday morning in to First-Degree Murder and other felony charges, and through a public defender, asked for a trial by jury.

Woodring was arrested June 26th after holding police at bay for nearly 19 hours following the shooting of Fulton County Sheriffs Deputy Troy Chisum.

Chisum was shot at leas twice as he responded to a battery and disturbance call in rural Avon. WMBD reports it was learned at the hearing that at least two shotguns and a weapon similar to an AK-47 were found in the home, and that a state trooper testified Woodring said to himself while in handcuffs that a gun “just accidentally went off twice.”

The not guilty plea — typical at arraignment — came after a judge found probable cause for Woodring to be tried.  A pre-trial hearing date has not yet been set.
