Two arrested on forgery, stolen gun recovered

Fake money led to the discovery of a stolen firearm and the arrest of two people.

21-year-old Taydem L. Devlin and 35-year-old James E. Henderson III made video appearances in Knox County Circuit Court where bond was set and the public defender’s office was appointed to represent their case.

Devlin is facing a Class 3 charge of Forgery. Henderson faces 13 felony gun charges — the most severe being four counts of unlawful use of a weapon, and two counts of possession of a stolen firearm, both of which are Class 2 felony charges. Other charges against Henderson include two counts of possession of a firearm with a revoked FOID card, two counts of being a felon in possession of a weapon, two counts of forgery, and two counts of unlawful use of a weapon — a lesser Class 4 felony than the earlier charges.

Judge Paul L. Mangieri set bond for Devlin at $15,000 while Henderson’s bond was set at $100,000.

According to a Galesburg Police report, officers were called out to Dollar General at 1210 North Henderson Street at around 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday after workers at the retail store discovered a counterfeit $100 bill.

Officers reviewed video and were able to locate the suspect and the red truck they were seen coming from. Officers stopped the vehicle as it was exiting the parking lot and located the suspect, who was revealed to be Henderson. Devlin was also located in the truck.

The driver told police that he had been contacted by Henderson and Devlin to pick them up from the Amtrak station and be their personal chauffeur for payment of $100.

Officers arrested Henderson and searched him, allegedly finding a second fake $100 bill in his pocket, bearing the same serial number as the bill used at Dollar General.

Police officers would discover that Devlin had an outstanding 2016 Knox County warrant and arrested her on it.

The driver, who wasn’t charged, told police he wanted none of the pair’s property and officers confiscated. Officers allegedly discovered merchandise from Rue 21. It was later revealed that Rue 21 had received a fake a $100 bill as well.

Both subjects were transported to jail to await bond hearings. Offices would search the bags that the two had with them, finding Amtrak tickets for both Devlin and Henderson.

Police say they found two firearms inside of the baggage: a Sig Sauer P938 9mm pistol with five rounds in a magazine and one in the chamber — reported stolen out of Atlanta, Georgia, and a Smith and Wesson 40-caliber handgun with an extended magazine — loaded with 14 rounds in the magazine and one in the chamber.

Reports indicated that Henderson had several weapons charges in his past and was a convicted felon.

Devlin will be back in Knox County Court for a bond rehearing on Wednesday, July 3. Both individuals have preliminary hearings scheduled for Monday, July 15.
