Sandburg approves FY 2020 budget

The Carl Sandburg College Board of Trustees have adopted their 2020 fiscal year budget with a 3.87-percent increase in revenue over 2019.

The new budget begins on July 1 and was adopted at the board meeting on Thursday.

The community college accounted for $25,591,609 in revenue, including $1,025,319 in state aid for the new fiscal year — due in part to a 5-percent increase in base operating funding noted in the state budget that was passed earlier in the month.

Sandburg was also awarded money from the state to fund capital improvement projects.

$422,700 was awarded to repair the parking lot and roads and $187,500 to replace the electrical systems throughout the main campus — many of which are between 40 and 50 years old.

The funds for the electrical upgrade will be used to replace “outdated switch gears, electrical boxes, and transformers,” and provide “additional electrical capacity to meet the changing needs of the college,” according to a release from the college.

“We are grateful for the stabilization in state funding. This will ensure we can continue to support our district,” President Dr. Seamus Reilly said in the release. “I want to thank the legislators who supported the release of funds for capital and deferred maintenance projects. These funds will allow us to make improvements and repairs to our physical spaces.”
