Local students win Congressional Art Competition

Congresswoman Cheri Bustos announced the winner and runners-up of the 2019 Congressional Art Competition in Illinois’ 17th Congressional District. On Saturday, May 4th in East Peoria, Congresswoman Bustos held her fourth annual Art Competition Showcase, which allowed students to display their artwork in a gallery setting. The first place winner this year is Arlan Brannon-Sibley from Galesburg, whose submission “Ignis Fatuus” will be displayed in the United States Capitol. As the winner in Illinois’ 17th Congressional District, Arlan will receive two airline tickets to Washington, D.C to see her artwork displayed in the Capitol. Arlan’s artwork titled “Ignis Fatuus” – which in Latin translates to “something deceptive” – depicts her own image of Lady Justice who does not have a defined look. Lady Justice is typically seen wearing a blindfold and a sword. Arlan decided to strip Lady Justice of her sword and place her blindfold on the scale as to suggest she is favoring one side over another. The runners-up include Sierra Potaczek from Galesburg, who will have her artwork displayed in Congresswoman Bustos’ Washington, D.C. office lobby, as well as, Jonathon Svoboda from Aledo, who will have his artwork displayed in Bustos’ Washington, D.C. office suite. High school students from Illinois’ 17th Congressional District were eligible to submit their original artwork for consideration. The public voted for their favorite piece.
