New report highlights the many problems at the Warren County Jail

A report on the Warren County Jail, its history, and perhaps whether or not the county needs a new jail, among other things, has been produced. The report, dated April 9th, was produced by Klingner Associates. The Warren County Jail was constructed around 1910 – but the building is presumed to be much older. The report states that when the jail was built, there were far fewer building code regulations at the time and the building does not comply with current codes for life-safety and energy conservation. “The thing that we’re struggling with is a facility that was engineered well over 100 years ago and practices were considerably different than they are now,” said Warren County Sheriff Martin Edwards. “It’s not conducive to modern detention practices. It creates safety issues. So there’s just a lot of things that probably need to be done differently to bring us into a more modern stance on how we do business.” The detailed report includes numerous deficiencies like water leakage through the roof and in the basement and restrooms, a rotting electrical panel mount, stairs not in compliance, cracks in walls and ceilings, plus office and cell defects. Edwards encourages the public to read the report because an action plan will be needed soon. Klingner will be producing a second report to illustrate the direction the county could go in.
