Woman in a coma after weekend hit and run accident

Galesburg Police are seeking more information in an apparent hit and run accident that occurred this weekend.

According to police, officers were dispatched to the 400-block of South Academy Street for an accident with injuries. Before arriving, officers learned that a vehicle had struck a pedestrian.

Officers found the woman lying in the street along with a male witness standing with her. It was noted that there were no crosswalks in that part of the street, but there were street lights illuminating that section of the road. The man told officers that they had been crossing the street diagonally at the time of the incident and he was ahead of the victim.

A second witness told officers that he was traveling south and passed the northbound woman. He then said he saw a dark-colored SUV driving between 50 and 60 miles an hour head north and strike the woman. He said he saw the accident in his side view mirror.

Police reports indicate that as of Sunday that the woman was in a chemically induced coma at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria.
