Galesburg Council approving external agency funding tonight

Galesburg City Council will consider external agency funding requests, with 19 groups poised to get a share of $102,000, at Monday night’s meeting.

Council documents note that the groups poised to receive funds are varied from community events, musical productions, assistance for citizens and learning opportunities for youth.

Two agencies could receive funds for the first time; VNA Community Services and the Galesburg Lion’s Club, who is applying for funding for the Independence Day fireworks at Lake Storey, instead of United Way who has in the past.

Only two organizations who asked for funds were not recommended for at least partially funding; Sugar High Theatricals because it hasn’t yet obtained non-profit status and Bridgeway applying to fund a recovery celebration event, but the city felt it was too client-focused for them to approve.

Others receiving funds are many events that Galesburg residents are familiar with like Great Balloon Race Railroad Days, National Stearman Fly-in to name a few.

The idea is for the city to give financial support to organizations and programs that provide a function for the community.

Council tonight can also extend the contract for Prairieland Animal Welfare Center, known to many as the Humane Society, to continue performing animal control and sheltering services.

The council agreed to a 5-year contract in 2016, but years four and five were dependant on both parties mutually agreeing to an extension.

The nearly $250,000 a year the city pays for animal control and sheltering services would remain the same if the contract is extended this and next year.

Council will also vote on purchasing a new radar speed sign for the front of Lombard Middle School after an existing sign was damaged in a hit and run.

The radar sign was effective in getting motorists to slow down when they were installed in 2013 with funds from a U.S. Department of Transportation program.

The replacement would cost about $6,000.
