Traffic incident leads to discovery of suspicious device

A suspicious device found following a motor vehicle accident in Monmouth remains under investigation.

Monmouth Police say that at around 5:00 p.m. on Friday while investigating a traffic accident at the corner of North C Street and West Franklin Avenue, officers were notified of the container sitting next to a utility pole.

Officers viewed what was described as a “poorly constructed homemade container” and notified the Peoria Police Department because of their specialized resources.

The homemade container, believed to potentially be hazardous, was secured until Peoria officers arrived.

Peoria PD was able to dismantle a homemade device after it was determined it posed a low risk to the area, with its contents secured to undergo forensic examination.

Officers inspected other public areas as a precautionary measure, but no indication was given that anything more was found.

Monmouth Police are encouraging anyone who spots suspicious behavior to reach out to them or the Warren County Crime Stoppers at 734-9363.
