Galesburg police urging vigilance as rash of debit cards are compromised

Galesburg police say they have been working closely with local financial institutions after recent reports of debit and credit cards being compromised.

Galesburg police say they believed a card skimmer was attached to the point of sale but have not recovered such a device and do not have suspects identified.

They also mention reports of the stolen card info being used at ATM’s in the Chicago area this past weekend.

Galesburg Police have been in contact with the FBI who has told them an investigation is currently open in the New York City Field Office, related to individuals using skimming devices to collect card information.

At least 27 states have seen this kind of activity, including Illinois.

F&M Bank sent out a release saying they are monitoring the situation and will notify their customers that have had their card compromised.

It was also revealed that several account holders with IH Mississippi Valley Credit Union were also affected.

Police are giving tips for identifying a card skimmer, like if its a machine that has a place to insert a chip but will only let you scan.

Another thing to be on the lookout for is if the buttons seem to hard to push and they also advise to be suspicious if a clerk says the machine isn’t working and asks to see your card.
