Two in custody after armed bank robbery Wednesday morning

UPDATED:  Two individuals are in custody after attempting an armed robbery of First Mid Bank And Trust in Galesburg Wednesday morning.

Galesburg Police Chief David Christensen says officers got a call just before 9:50 a.m. to respond to the location on East Main Street. An employee also used the bank’s panic button after making the call.

Christensen says more formal details will be released in the coming day, but that one black male and one black female got away from the scene with an undetermined amount of cash, and got as far as to the Hardee’s on East Main Street before being arrested.  The chief says that happened when restaurant employees noticed suspicious activity.

The names of the suspects are being withheld until formal charges can be filed.

Christensen says police got assistance from the Knox County Sheriffs Department and the FBI. He declined to say what charges would be facing, but says Armed Robbery is a possibility.

WGIL will keep you updated with additional information as it becomes available.

A previous version reported that the robbery was at First Midwest Bank. The story has been updated to reflect this change.
